The Charley Project: Joanne Gladys Garr

Philip at first said she was visiting a friend in Ohio, and when this statement proved false he said she was in Illinois. Then he told her Joanne had packed her things and left him, and a man had been waiting to drive her away. Joanne’s mother reported her missing at that time.

This is what he told her mother. The changing stories suggest to me two things, assuming of course that he murdered her and hid her body:

  1. He had not thought out the murder and did suddenly and maybe even accidentally, possibly as the result of a beating. And/or he wasn’t very intelligent.
  2. He was extremely arrogant and thought that a flimsy story or changing stories would not raise any questions in her mother’s mind.
